Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) is part of the interleukin 1 family of cytokines. It is produced by activated macrophages as a proprotein, which is proteolytically processed to its active form by caspase 1 (CASP1/ICE). The molecular weight of the proteolytically processed IL-1β is 17.5 kDa. This cytokine is an important mediator of the inflammatory response, and is involved in a variety of cellular activities, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. IL-1β contributes to suppression of the immune response against the tumor by recruiting immunosuppressive cells such as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to the tumor microenvironment.
